The goal of the residency training program is the provision of diverse clinical experience in the field of surgery, which includes the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative management of the surgical patient. Residents rotate on multiple surgical teams at Staten Island University Hospital for the majority of their time where they are exposed to a wide variety of surgical expertise and pathology. We are a five-year general surgery residency program offering three categorical positions per year. The surgical training program includes fully accredited vascular surgery, critical care, and advanced GI minimally invasive surgery fellowship programs. The members of the Department of Surgery have succeeded in producing centers of surgical excellence and have expertise in many areas, including laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery, surgical oncology, trauma, burn and surgical critical care, bariatric surgery, vascular and endovascular surgery, minimally invasive cardiac and general thoracic surgery, and surgical research. At UC San Diego La Jolla and Hillcrest a preset amount of money is provided for the year. On-Call Meals On-Call meal points are provided at the VA Hospital based on the number of call nights. Laundering services are provided by the Linen's department. Uniforms Two lab coats with embroidery are provided yearly. Malpractice insurance is also provided by the University. Life Insurance There is a $40,000 life insurance plan for the resident physician, which includes a double indemnity clause of $80,000, and is provided by the University at no cost to the resident. Insurance Coverage Health insurance with Blue Cross and disability plans are available to resident physicians and their dependents, as well as dental and vision coverage, provided as an employment benefit with NO COST to the resident or his/her dependents. Additional leave for illness, family medical emergencies, or maternity/paternity may be taken according to written policy in the UCSD House Officer Policy and Procedure Document (HOPPD). Vacation Four weeks of paid vacation are offered per year. Licensing Fees All Medical Board Licensing Fees and USMLE Step III application fees are paid for by the UC San Diego House Staff Association.
